Community Co-Creation Through Sound

In collaboration with Downtown Pompey Portsmouth

Project Goals and Focus:
The project aims to engage diverse communities through sound recording, sound mapping, soundscapes listening, and oral histories, exploring and recontextualizing Portsmouth’s heritage through a queer lens.

The main objectives are to:

Develop innovative ways of co-creating and archiving materials with local communities.
Build bridges between different community groups using sound as a medium.
Highlight diverse stories within the city’s heritage.
Make Portsmouth’s heritage more accessible and relevant to contemporary audiences

A series of 6 Workshops :
– Introduction to Creative Field Recording
Discover the art of capturing soundscapes and sonic textures from your surroundings. This hands-on session introduces the basics of using microphones, recorders, and techniques to creatively document the world around you.

– Sound Walk: Exploring Portsmouth’s Sonic Identity
Join us for a guided journey through Portsmouth’s urban and natural soundscapes. Learn how to actively listen, identify sonic landmarks, and interpret the city’s unique auditory identity in a way that enhances storytelling and memory.

– Storytelling Through Sound
Sound is a powerful narrative tool. This workshop explores how to use interviews, environmental recordings, and sound design to craft immersive audio stories that bring history, identity, and emotion to life.

– Introduction to Sound Editing
Learn the essentials of shaping and refining recorded sounds. This session covers basic editing techniques, layering, and effects using accessible digital tools, enabling you to create clean, engaging sound pieces.

– Sound Composition & Mixing
Dive deeper into sound creation by exploring how to blend, arrange, and mix recordings into cohesive compositions. Whether for radio, installation, or personal projects, you’ll gain insights into structuring sound for impact.

– Sound Mapping & Sonic Cartography
Explore the concept of sound mapping, geolocating sounds to create immersive, interactive auditory experiences. Learn how to contribute to a sound map and understand how location-based audio can reshape our perception of place.
