Frémissement

Sound-Art can be thought as a catalyst for instigating changes in social cognition. Frémissement is a sonic Eco-system designed to explore and reflect on avenues of resistance, hacking, and disruption.

At the heart of this interactive sound installation lies the gentle quivering of plastic and paper bags and wrapping papers. Engaging with the exhibit, visitors are invited to manipulate rocks on a shelf, triggering the random trembling and gentle rustling of various types of bags. These motions and sounds are brought to life by small vibrating motors, akin to the ones found in our ubiquitous mobile phones, their movements precisely controlled by electronic modules discreetly attached to the walls of the space.

In the context of our current reality, even the slightest Frémissement serves as a subtle yet influential signal for embracing agency and resistance. Merely observing and listening to plastic bags being carried away by the wind on the streets fosters contemplation about ecology and the profound political and sociological implications of these changes.

Could the solution to the chaos of the past few decades lie in embracing calm and quiet resistance? Can subtlety and delicateness serve as effective postures to address the challenges we encounter? Is their impact potent enough to make a meaningful difference? Can a simple Frémissement have a profound effect on a larger scale?

This piece repurposes everyday negatively impactful objects, such as grocery bags and electronic components from our cellular devices, to establish a space and time for contemplation and reflection on waste-related issues. Additionally, it aims to expand the discourse on resistance, potential solutions, impact, postures, and the essence of existence.

A first occurrence of Frémissement has been presented in Sierra Metro in Edinburgh between January and February 2024 as part of the collective exhibition Room To Play with Tinderbox Collective.
